Born in Camagüey, Cuba, Juan Carlos attended the university where he studied veterinary medicine.  His studies were interrupted when he and his family had the opportunity to come to the United States.  He is married to Belinda Vila and together, they have four children.  His personal interests include travel, fishing, hunting and reading business books.

His community work is both local and international.  At the local level, he and his company have contributed to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami, building homes for low-income families, as well as USSOUTHCOM, sponsoring community-building activities for soldiers and their families. At the international level, he was chosen to participate in the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference of the United States Department of Defense (JCOC), where he has traveled abroad to visit troops and accompanied them on community-building missions.
